Shnelvar Runs to Legalize Marijuana

by Ari Armstrong, June 14, 2002

Ralph Shnelvar is running for governor, and one of his main issues is the legalization of marijuana. Shnelvar helped organize a June 1 rally at City Park called "Taste of Marijuana." Ken Gorman, an activist for legalization, led the event.

Several hundred people attended the event throughout the afternoon. The Libertarian party of Colorado set up a table. Michael McKinzie, the state LP's Outreach Director, said 128 people registered to vote Libertarian at the event, a single-day total he believes is a record. Nevertheless, Shnelvar said he had expected a larger turnout.

Shnelvar said he has never used marijuana, but he supports the right of other people to do so. He hopes to attract a large voting block because of the issue.
