Socialism -- "For the Children"
by Ari Armstrong, September 1999
We need more gun control -- for the children. We need to pay higher taxes -- for the children. We need to spend more money on government schools and the NEA lobby -- for the children. We need more powerful central regulatory agencies and more armed Federal agents -- for the children.
I'm so sick and tired of politicians imposing ever more severe socialistic restrictions on peoples' actions -- "for the children."
What's the real meaning of the phrase, "do it for the children," in American politics? It means that some adults with power lust want to control the resources of other adults.
I often disagree with Bill Maher of the television show Politically Incorrect, but he said something interesting recently about children. To the extent that we worship children and make our legal system revolve around them, we turn them into spoiled brats less capable of growing into responsible adults.
Obviously, the legal system must protect children from violence, just as it must protect everyone. But the way to protect children is not to turn our country into a police state in which morality is handed down from the Federal government and peaceable citizens are restricted or imprisoned.
If we really want to do something good for the children, we will roll back the State's taxes and regulations, so that our children won't be forced to live in a centrally controlled, conformist society. Such a society encourages dependence upon the political elite, which makes it less likely that children will ever develop into self-governing adults. Let us instead build a flourishing free society, for the children, and for ourselves as well.
If you ever feel yourself starting to fall into the hypnotic drone of the politicians calling for more socialism "for the children," I offer a simple remedy. View the film Waco: The Rules of Engagement, which shows in horrifying detail how the Federal government brutally murdered more than a dozen children at the Mt. Carmel Center in Waco, Texas. Remember that this is the organization that spends your taxes and imposes social controls. Adults and children alike need more liberty, not more State control.
